Ch. 12 LEARNING OF NAT

The next morning, as E111517 is preparing to leave, Rod asks him to the basement and shows him an undisclosed vault. It appears as a sump pump in the corner of the basement showing the black cover and pipe exiting out the wall. Rod removes the pipe and the cover revealing the safe buried in the concrete floor. Carefully spinning the dial, Rod unlocks the door then pulls out a manila envelope with security numbers and messages on the outside of it. Handing the envelope to E111517 with a serious face, he urges him to read the governmental report. Untwining the red string in a figure of eight from the tabs, E111517 removes the file and reads:

Peace Keepers of Zudal.

Zudal is an isolated valley encircled by rugged and steep mountains making it difficult to enter the land. Viewing the world from the center of the valley, you can see mountain peaks on every horizon. At the south end of the valley, a ravine carves through the mountains with a river and a single lane road for the only safe exit. During Kissness, the cold and wet season, the road is underwater as the ravine drains the valley of excess rain. The road is useable only in Cairad, the warm and dry season, and is the only time trade with the outside world is possible.

The valley of Zudal has eight towns acting as commerce centers for the different regions. The southernmost town is Noova, which butts against the mountains. The people of Noova control the trade with the outside world and make sure no one from the outside world enters Zudal without permission. At the northernmost town is Nabba and its main product is iron for building since there are ore deposits in the hills around it. It is a six-hour brisk walk from Noova to Nabba. A horse-drawn buggy will take two hours and a fast horse will get you there in an hour.

The mining cities to the west process gold and silver found in the hills around their towns. They specialize in jewelry and trinkets sold to the outside world. The eastern towns favor fruit and olive trees to make the finest oils for cooking. The two center towns thrive on farming with wheat production as their most profitable source. The valley floor is rich in minerals and the ground produces abundant vegetables and plants for survival. The cattle, goats, and sheep are fat from grazing year-round on the lush grass from the fertile land.

Zudal’s population is around 10,000, but no one has counted. Zudalites are quiet, laid-back people and are in no hurry to do anything. There are no deadlines, and everyone understands that even the best-laid plans sometimes do not work. There is always tomorrow to finish anything started today. Because of this attitude of not worrying about getting anything done, Zudalites are great planners and efficient workers. They have mastered the art of seeing all the variables in a problem and solving it.
